【展覽簡介|About this exhibition】

It sounds like a prophecy at the end of 2019. The name of the project "Let’s meet tomorrow before the end of our time!" sprouted in our meeting, and then the epidemic suddenly affected globally. From the winter of 2019 to the summer of 2021, Taiwan seemed to be in a parallel universe. We almost had normal daily life while the other places were suffering from the epidemic. However, in May 2021, after we discussed the title of this exhibition "What we do when we don’t meet.", which was expected to be held in August, the epidemic situation then went severe in Taiwan all of a sudden. We really cannot meet each other since then.

"Let’s meet tomorrow before the end of our time!" It was a joint creation project initiated by several college art teachers who have different expertise but both care about the environment. With the hope of affecting the next generation, we take "Anthropocene" as the starting point of the project, and spanning it into three continents/ four schools, which are Department of Fine Arts, Tunghai University; Social Film Studio, Academy of Art in Szczecin; Faculty of Art and Faculty of Social Communication, Central University of Ecuador; Graduate Institute of Interdisciplinary Art, National Kaohsiung Normal University. The teachers and students formed four teams, and worked together under different national, historical and cultural backgrounds. In order to open up joint experiment creation across countries/ time zones through different combinations of “local and online”, and explore the meaning and status of the Anthropocene nowadays.

This experimental project started from the environmental thinking of the Anthropocene, but was immediately influenced by the keep-changing situation of global pandemic. A series of attempts to explore the working methods of art, education, community, and culture brought different emotions such as excitement, stimulation, frustration, disappointment. As the pandemic continues to worsen, and pictures circulating on the Internet---the blockade of empty cities around the world seems to be the end of our time. Meanwhile, this project faced many anticipated and unforeseen events, revealing that human nature and the connection between people are strong and fragile at the same time. The connection and disconnection between us and others and the environment is not a contradiction and exists parallelly.

Continuing the processing exhibition at the Tunghai University Art Center in April 2021, the phased achievement exhibition at the Yao Space includes the “Apocalypse Karaoke” by the Taichung Group; the result of "Instructions For How To Be Together" initiated by Poland Group; the viewpoints and feedback from two observers accompanying the project during the year. Furthermore, we will invite new participants who will join the project from 2021 to 2022 with the continuing members to explore and propose new plans. Together, we will think about how we will work together in the future before the end of our time, under the epidemic, in the realities of working transnationally and with trans-time zones. We wish to create methods to meet each other, make things change, and reconnect with each other and the world.
